Introduction à Monte Carlo en R
Following a proposal by Springer-Verlag Paris, I have decided to translate Introducing Monte Carlo Methods with R with George Casella into French, since a new collection of R books (in French) is planed for the Spring of 2010. The translation will a priori be done by Joachim Robert and Robin Ryder, under my supervision and with the support of Springer-Verlag Paris. I have already translated the first chapter as I needed to cut most of the R coverage, since this collection assumes a prior knowledge of R and aims at a smaller number of pages (around 200) to keep the price as low as possible.

I think some kind of programming book should be written for Bayesian computations, for people who are not too skilled in programming.

Dear Professor,
Do you really recommend R ? Some people say it is much slower than Matlab. Others recommend Python. What would be nice would be somekind of an appendix with just enough C for R, teaching the important things to implement in C within R (at least for Monte Carlo methods). Maybe this is not a good idea.

Thank you for the comment. I am actually using R for all my courses and for my basic experiments, because of its easy syntax, its versatility and the huge backup provided by thousands of packages. As stated in the preface of the book, most of the other options are certainly faster and more efficient! So in the case you need to handle realistically hard problems, R will not be useful as a primary programming language but rather as an interface to C or Python. We did not get into much details about interfacing R with C because this gets quickly technical, but illustrate the possibility thru the introduction of the amcm package by Jeff Rosenthal.
