Kind of amazing that someone would trust the arguments of Boole, Venn, and Chrystal over those of Laplace!

Laplace had sort of a bad name in England during the 19th Century, maybe because he was a supporter of Napoléon, to whom he dedicated his Mécanique céleste, and briefly his Minister of Interior (as he was seeking “l’esprit des ‘infiniment petits’ jusque dans l’administration”, dixit his former student at Polytechnique, Napoléon Bonaparte).
