Advancements in Bayesian Methods and Implementations [to appear]

Posted in Books, Statistics with tags , , , , , on July 17, 2022 by xi'an

As noted in another post, I wrote a chapter on Bayesian testing for an incoming handbook, Advancements in Bayesian methods and implementations which is published by Elsevier at an atrocious price (as usual). Here is the table of contents:

1. Fisher Information, Cramèr-Rao and Bayesian Paradigm by Roy Frieden
2. Compound beta binomial distribution functions by Angelo Plastino
3. MCMC for GLMMS by Vivekananda Roy
4. Signal Processing and Bayesian by Chandra Murthy
5. Mathematical theory of Bayesian statistics where all models are wrong by Sumio Watanabe
6. Machine Learning and Bayesian by Jun Zhu
7. Non-parametric Bayes by Stephen Walker
8. [50 shades of] Bayesian testing [of hypotheses] by Christian P. Robert
9. Data Analysis with humans by Sumio Kaski
10. Bayesian Inference under selection by G. Alastair Young
10. Variational inference or Functional horseshoe by Anirban Bhattacharya
11. Generalized Bayes by Ryan Martin

and my chapter is also available on arXiv, quickly gathered from earlier short courses at O’Bayes meetings and some xianblog entries on the topic, hence not containing much novelty!

O’Bayes 19: registration and travel support

Posted in pictures, Running, Travel, University life with tags , , , , , , , on February 14, 2019 by xi'an

An update about the O’Bayes 19 conference next June-July:  the early registration period has now opened. And there should be funds for supporting early-career researchers, thanks to Google and CNRS sponsorships, as detailed below:

Early-career researchers less than four years from PhD, are invited to apply for early-career scholarships. If you are a graduate student, postdoctoral researcher or early-career academic and you are giving a poster, you are eligible to apply. Female researchers and underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Selected applicants will receive up to £450, which can be used for any combination of fees, travel and accommodation costs, subject to receipts.

The deadline for applying is the 15th of March (which is also the deadline to submit the abstract for the poster) and it has to be done at the registration phase via the dedicated page. Those who have submitted an abstract before this information on scholarships was made available (11 Feb.) and applying for travel support should contact the organisers.

Juan Antonio Cano Sanchez (1956-2018)

I have just learned the very sad news that Juan Antonio Cano, from Universidad de Murcia, with whom Diego Salmerón and I wrote two papers on integral priors, has passed away, after a long fight against a kidney disease. Having communicated with him recently, I am quite shocked by him passing away as I was not aware of his poor health. The last time we met was at the O’Bayes 2015 meeting in Valencià, with a long chat in the botanical gardens of the Universitat de Valencià. Juan Antonio was a very kind and unassuming person, open and friendly, with a continued flow of research in Objective Bayes methodology and in particular on integral priors. Hasta luego, Juan Antonio!

O’Bayes 2017 in Austin, Texas

Posted in pictures, Statistics, Travel, University life with tags , , , , , , , on March 30, 2016 by xi'an

The next edition of the O’Bayes conference, O’Bayes 2017, will take place at the University of Texas in Austin, with the tentative dates of Dec. 10-13. Somehow making the connection with the previous O’Bayes in Valencià thanks to its Spanish history (even though, technically, Texas was French from 1684 till 1689!!!). With a local committee made of Lizhen Lin, Tom Shively, Carlos Carvalho & Peter Müller. Further details should emerge in the coming months, but keep this objective date in your calendars! (Note that NIPS 2017 will take place in Long Beach, CA, the week before.)
