my neighbourhood in the New Yorker

While I was reading (part of) a recent issue of The New Yorker over breakfast, I was surprised to find my neighbourhood city of Bourg-la-Reine (twin city, Kenilworth!) mentioned in a tribune! It was about interviewing the local authors of a boardgame called Kapital! which is presented there as a form of (French) anti-Monopoly, authors who were both CNRS researchers in sociology until they retired. And who produced (even) more militant ouput since then, including this boardgame. The (unintended?) fun in the tribune is the opposition between the May 68 style class warfare denounced by the authors and their apparently well-off conditions (no BBQ in the street there!).

running in circles

As lockdown rules concerning outdoor activities were rather restrictive (run alone, away from other people, at most one hour and at most 1km away from home), I used the network of streets around my house to design a 13km circuit that was never replicating more than intersecting previously visited roads. And I ran it every one of the 60 days of the lockdown.

This was a purely urban run on pavement only, but offered nice views of the neighbouring suburbs, with three hills to climb.

And hardly anyone in the streets, except for the occasional soul walking her dog. And never a single control of the laisser-passer I had to print every morn.

Going by the park and the local swimming pool every day and unrealistically wishing they would open soon…

There is a conference on mixtures (M) and hidden Markov models (H) and clustering (C) taking place in Orsay on June 17-19, next year. Registration is free if compulsory. With about twenty confirmed speakers. (Irrelevant as the following remark is, this is the opportunity to recall the conference on mixtures I organised in Aussois 25 years before! Which website is amazingly still alive at Duke, thanks to Mike West, my co-organiser along with Kathryn Roeder and Gilles Celeux. When checking the abstracts, I found only two presenters common to both conferences, Christophe Biernaki and Jiahua Chen. And alas several names of departed friends.)
